The doorbell played the Big Ben theme. I got up, grabbed my bowl, and opened the door to see two little girls of about four or five backed by a grinning teenage girl. "Trick or Treat!" they chimed. They were all little witches and cute as could be. "Well," I said, "the witches are getting prettier every year." That got giggles. I put a couple of pieces of wrapped hard candy in each bag. "Thank you!" they chimed in synch and turned away. I had about a quarter of a bowl of candy left when business began to drop off. Finally, I managed to read a whole chapter before the chimes sounded again. Probably the last, I thought, and older kids at the end of the evening. I was surprised to see two little girls backed by what looked like their twelve year old brother. The girls must have been about nine and seven. They were dressed as kitty cats in tight black jerseys and bottoms with tails attached in the back. They had hoods with ears and their faces were cleverly made up with bright red noses and black whiskers over their cheeks. The boy had on ordinary jeans and T-shirt, but sported an eye-patch, a construction paper black pirate hat and eye patch. "Pussy cats!" I exclaimed. "Can I hear a big meow?" They looked at each other, giggled and mewed for me. I contributed a handful of candy to each bag. Instead of leaving, they looked at each other and then the older girl said, shyly, "Uh ... could we please use your bathroom?"
