Almost immediately after the monastary had been turned into an orphanage it housed almost 150 children. After WWI, the population swelled to over 200 and stayed around that number through the depression years and WWII. After the second world war, however, American society underwent major changes. The population soared, immigration slowed, and places like southeast Tennessee crept slowly into poverty, disarray, and abandoment.

The orphanage did not escape this dissolution. As the economy all around it fell into despair, life became much harder. Donations from former benefactors slowly dried up, leaving the nuns in a state of, if not despair, certainly unhappiness. They were able to take in fewer and fewer children and their number eventually fell to the thirteen told of in the following paragraphs. Had it not been for their tax-exempt status and meager grants from private donors, the Sisters would have had to close the place long ago, but there were still had operating costs. It was this sorry state that pulled the place down the road of debauchery and perversion.

They found a clientele for the product almost immediately. Like the sisters in Arsenic And Old Lace, whose elderberry wine laid low many an imbibing gentleman, takers were relatively easy to find. Their first pictures sold so fast they couldn't keep up with the demand and the 8mm movies sold even faster. "I never suspected," opined Susannah with a touch of sarcasm, "that there were so many child lovers in the world." There were and the Sisters were glad of it. They convinced themselves that they were performing a service for mankind by providing for those who could not provide for them- selves and, in as sense, they were. After all, they were probably keeping many possibly dangerous sexual predators off the streets.

To the everlasting surprise of all but Sister Maria, her movie with the dog sold more than any other and there wasn't a child anywhere in it. With her caustic wit, Susannah had remarked that it must have been the beautiful dog rather than the plain Maria that was the attraction. Since that film had been so successful, it was decided that another "animal" film should be produced, perhaps with a child or two in it as well. Maria suggested Julie since she was such a cute little slut and even had the beginnings of some nice hooters.

So a production list was made up, Maria and her dog first with assistance by Julie and maybe one of the boys, then several with the older children and one or more of the Sisters. Last came the little ones. They weren't sure exactly to utilize the really small children, those under six or so. They decided to use them for display only and perhaps minor fondling. That decision was easy to reach during the discussion, but difficult to hold to during the actual filming and, as it turned out, wasn't held to. ......(cont)
