Vo-Tech
by Spangles Muldoon
I was working on a project in the office one afternoon when I received a visit from the vocational counselor from the local high school. He was looking for local businesses to hire vocational students for part time work. I really didn't need the help in the office, and I certainly couldn't afford to pay someone when there was no real work for them to do, but then he told be that their salary would be subsidized by the school district. As I thought about it more, I decided that it might not be too bad to have a receptionist / clerk part time, and it wouldn't hurt at all if she were a good looking, nicely built high schooler. I told him that I would be more than happy to take a vocational student. He said he would send some over to interview with me on Monday afternoon. He called me the next day and told me he had five students for me to talk to. I agreed to see one an hour beginning at noon.
The first candidate arrived thirty minutes early on Monday. It was a guy, and I knew damn well that even talking to him was a waste of time. He was not going to get this job. Still, I went through the motions and got rid of him quickly. Number two was better. Well, sort of. She was a girl, but was not the type I would want working in my office. I don't know if it was the pierced tongue or the green hair. Maybe it was the spiked dog collar. She seemed intelligent enough, and was certainly eager, but there was no way in hell I was going to hire her.
Number three arrived right on time. She was not beautiful, although she well could have been with a little makeup, a better hairstyle, and some nicer clothes. She was a brunette with dark eyes. She was about five foot six or thereabouts, and her build was nice, but not really proportionate. She was wearing a white blouse and a navy blue skirt. She was nicely tanned, so she didn't need hose. I had the impression she was from a poorer family. Her name was Jana.
I took her into my office and talked to her for about fifteen minutes. I wasn't really all that decisive about her. Granted, she wasn't bad, but there were still two more coming, and I would hate to settle for her only to find out the next one was better. I already knew that I wouldn't make a decision until I had seen all the candidates, but I don't think she realized that. I was finishing up my notes on her and I guess the silence was too much for her to bear. She said "I really want this job. Actually, I really NEED this job. I will do whatever it takes to get it and will work very hard when I do."
I had to admit this girl was a contender for the job. I think she meant what she said, and I had little doubt that I would be doing more with her than just enjoying the view. I moved Jana's folder to the top of the stack. I told her I would make my decision after I had talked to all the applicants. She seemed happy with that, and actually gave me a little panty flash as she got up out of the chair. I didn't think it was unintentional.
Shannon was next on the schedule, but she didn't show up. Never did learn why. Fortunately, DeAnn arrived almost a half hour early, so I started my interview with her. DeAnn was gorgeous. I mean drop dead gorgeous. Perfect smile, perfect hair, perfect build. Long blonde hair and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. She was actually breathtaking. She was dressed to the nines. Very business like, very professional. No doubt the perfect candidate. I had pretty much decided on her as soon as she walked in the door, but told her that I would make my decision overnight and notify the counselor in the morning.......(cont)
