It all started because I got lost in New York City. I was riding north, intending to head out across Connecticut to Rhode Island, then north across Massachusetts and on to Maine. Somehow, I got side tracked in New York City and by the time I found out I had gone the wrong way, I was mid way out on Long Island. I stopped for gas and to look at the map and access my situation. I didn't have many choices.

I'd like to be able to say that I started my own business out of a sense of entrepreneurship, drive, and self-motivation. Yes, I'd like to be able to say that, but I'd be lying if I did. I started my own business because I couldn't find a job. Plain and simple. I'd also like to say that my business took off like a rocket ship, and that I made more money than I ever had before in my life, but of course, I can't say that, either. Still, I did alright.

You might have called us a garage band, except that none of us had a garage and we weren't much of a band. We were just a group of very bored junior high guys with no talent and big aspirations that we each knew would never come true. We were all in a similar situation to one degree or another. We were all stuck in a nothing, dead end town, we were all relatively poor, we all lived on the poor side of town, and we were all misfits.

I was working for the Coast Guard and was based in North Carolina. While I liked my job, the location left quite a bit to be desired. On the good side, though, I was seldom there, as I had to travel between twenty two Coast Guard Air Stations, so I was on the go a great deal. Sometimes it was on commercial airliners, sometimes on Coast Guard aircraft. It was late afternoon on a Tuesday when I was told I had to go to Puerto Rico the next morning. Short notice travel was a way of life with them, and it became a way of life with me. The plan was to be gone for two days.

I really didn't like Sherri. I tolerated her, though, because Kevin wanted to fuck her, and he would have done the same for me. Admittedly, he had made absolutely no progress towards doing that yet, so he agreed to drive her to Stillwater one weekend to visit some of her friends. He figured he could gain some major points with her by doing that, not to mention getting to spend a lot of time with her during the trip.

I guess I was naive, but at the time it seemed like a good way to make some extra money for very little work. Looking back on it now, joining the Air National Guard was a dumbshit idea. Sure, it wasn't too bad doing drill weekends, and for that matter, summer camp was not all that bad either. I actually sort of enjoyed it. I was working in the Guard as an aircraft mechanic, and because of licenses, ratings, and experience in the civilian world, I had a dual specialty code, one for fixed wing, and one for helicopter.

It was my second weekend in Wichita Falls. My first weekend there I had gone home, all night on a Greyhound. I bought a car while I was home and brought it back with me. I had transportation, which most of the guys didn't have. Problem was that I had absolutely no money left. I found a copy of Cracked Magazine, a poor imitation of Mad, and was in my room reading it. There was a pen pal section in there, so I decided to drop a line to one of the girls listed there. The one I picked was Connie Archa.

Generally speaking, Danny was a dumbshit. I guess it wasn't really his fault, but damn, he sure could be dense. I guess it was mostly a function of his age and lack of worldly experience, after all, he was only seventeen, and had lived his entire life thusfar in a small, backwards, redneck town. Sometimes the shit he pulled was downright funny, although unintentionally, and sometimes it was pathetic.

I have been working in aviation longer than I even care to remember. I work on the technical and regulatory side of aviation. I am not a pilot or aircrew member, nor do I have any desire to be. As a result of my chosen field, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively in several parts of the world. I am currently working for a helicopter company that is looking for new markets to expand into. They are looking at the possibility of expanding internationally. The countries they chose to look at were the Phillipines and Russia. Russia I could understand, but I really didn't understand the idea behind expansion into the Phillipines.

You learn a lot over the years, at least I know I did. Those of you who have read my other stories know that I grew up in a small, backwards, redneck town, and that my greatest ambition was to get the hell out of there and never return. So far, I have managed to do just that. Still, as you get older, you learn, or, more importantly, you begin to piece together, tidbits of information, and you find out that what used to be a puzzle now begins to make a little sense. Sometimes, that leads to the realization that what you used to perceive as a handicap is in actuality a benefit. That, in part, is why I decided to make a pilgrimage of sorts, and go back to the old hometown.
