The Lock-up, ch 1-2
Written by singledad
I was using the shortcut one early evening when I saw a bunch of kids pulling the windscreen wipers off a car, I decided to stop, it is so annoying getting back to your car and finding it vandalised. The kids were no older than twelve I would say, so I didn't feel too threatened, I went over to them and challenged them.
"What's it to you mister" one of them said, he was a scrawny kid about ten I would guess.
I told them that it was mean to do what they were doing, and it could be dangerous when the owner went to clear the rain from his windscreen, as I spoke, I realised how lame I sounded. And as I walked back to my car, there were several derisive comments. I got in my car and was about to pull away when a two girls came up to my side window, the one who spoke was about ten she must have been about seventy pounds, four six, and she wore a crop top tied off showing eight inches of bare tummy before her pink jeans started, she had a dirty scrawny child with her of about 7 or eight, about forty five pounds, not much over three six, and wearing some of the dirtiest yellow shorts it would be possible to own. She made a gesture to wind down my window, I was cautious, but I did.
"Hey mate, whatcha doin' down this road?" she asked,
I told her that I used it as a short cut to my house, she thought about it then said that she'd seen my car before, she said that they all vandalised the cars round here, for something to do, and because they resented people with the money to buy cars. I did see her point, but I said it was still wrong, and that those people had probably worked hard for the money to buy the cars. She thought again, and then said how difficult it was to get money when you live in an estate of this kind, I asked if she did part time jobs after school, a paper round maybe, she thought for a bit and said how all those jobs were gone before you went for them.
"You got any money I could have?" she said
I was taken aback, the little tyke was bold I'll give her that, I said that I worked hard for the money I have.
"I can work for money" she replied,
