"Do you really like this pink shade?" Becky said, her chin resting on her raised knee, her fingers carefully guiding the small brush over the nail on her big toe. "It's called 'Cotton Candy'."

"I like it all right," her friend Julie replied, taking the brush and starting to paint her own toenails. "Not that it's going to do us any good, we still can't get any boys to pay attention to us", she added in a disgusted tone. "I just can't believe we're going to start high school in a month, summer's almost over, and we still haven't had any dates. The only boys that even look at us are Jason Knipling and his dweeb buddy Jerry."

"Eeewwwww," Becky replied, wrinkling her nose in disgust. "I'd rather go through all of high school without a date than let either of those two touch me, they are so slimy."

The two fourteen-year-olds spent the next ten minutes discussing all the boys they knew and passing the small brush from the hot pink nail polish back and forth. The two were quite opposite in appearance. Becky was small, barely over five feet tall, with shoulder-length light blond hair. Julie was tall, almost 5' 8" tall with short black hair cut to frame her cute, heart-shaped face. Becky had small breasts and hadn't lost all her baby fat, she still was a little pudgy around her waist. Julie, on the other hand, was slim with incredibly long legs and small, budding breasts. Both girls were at the stage where they were about to blossom into beautiful teenagers - but that future prospect didn't give them any comfort as the last month of summer stretched out in front of them. In the fall the daunting prospect of starting four years of high school, four years of competing with grownup teenagers, loomed large in their minds.

"I mean it's not like we are some sort of dogs or anything," Julie said. "I mean we're cute and fun and have great clothes and stuff."

"So what the hell do the boys want anyway? What's wrong with us that only total losers pay any attention to us?" Becky replied bitterly. ......(cont)
